Kalash Sthapana (कलश स्थापना), also known as Ghatasthapana (घटस्थापना), marks the beginning of Sharadiya Navratri (शारदीय नवरात्रि). This traditional ritual invokes Maa Durga's blessings and establishes a sacred space for nine days of worship. The puja may include Kalash preparation, prayers, offerings, and Durga Puja according to family traditions.
Kalash Sthapana (कलश स्थापना), also known as Ghatasthapana (घटस्थापना), is an important Hindu ritual that marks the beginning of Sharadiya Navratri (शारदीय नवरात्रि), usually celebrated during September–October. The ritual is performed to invoke divine blessings and prepare a sacred space for the worship of Maa Durga (माँ दुर्गा) during the nine days of Navratri. It is commonly observed in homes and temples as the starting point of Navratri पूजा and devotional practices.
According to Hindu tradition, the kalash is regarded as an auspicious symbol of divine presence, prosperity, and sacred energy. During कलश स्थापना, devotees establish the kalash using traditional पूजा सामग्री and offer prayers to Maa Durga. The ritual marks the beginning of नवरात्रि and sets the foundation for daily worship, mantra jaap, आरती, and other devotional observances throughout the festival.
The puja generally begins with cleaning and preparing the पूजा स्थल. The Pandit or family members arrange the required पूजा सामग्री and establish the kalash according to the prescribed tradition. Depending on the regional custom, the ritual may involve water, mango leaves, a coconut, sacred thread, grains, flowers, and other auspicious items. The kalash is then worshipped with prayers, मंत्र जाप, पुष्प अर्पण, and offerings.
कलश स्थापना is traditionally performed during an auspicious time on the first day of Navratri. The exact Muhurat changes each year and may vary according to the location and Hindu calendar. Devotees should confirm the appropriate timing for their city before performing the ritual.
कलश स्थापना marks the beginning of the wider Sharadiya Navratri observance dedicated to Maa Durga and her nine forms, known as Navadurga (नवदुर्गा). After the kalash is established, devotees may perform daily दुर्गा पूजा, light a diya, offer फल, फूल, मिठाई and भोग, recite Durga mantras, and perform आरती. Some families also arrange Durga Saptashati Path (दुर्गा सप्तशती पाठ) or Havan (हवन), depending on their customs and chosen puja arrangements.
Kanya Pujan (कन्या पूजन), also called Kanjak Puja (कंजक पूजा), is a separate traditional observance commonly performed on Ashtami (अष्टमी) or Navami (नवमी). Young girls are respectfully worshipped as symbolic representations of the Divine Feminine and may be offered भोजन, प्रसाद, fruits, sweets, or gifts according to family tradition. Kanya Pujan is generally performed later during Navratri and is not automatically included in the Kalash Sthapana ritual.
Kalash Sthapana may be arranged by individuals and families wishing to begin शारदीय नवरात्रि with traditional worship. It is suitable for devotees planning nine days of माँ दुर्गा की आराधना, daily prayers, fasting according to personal practice, and other Navratri rituals at home or in a temple. The ceremony can be adapted to regional customs and family traditions with guidance from a Pandit.
The selected package may include Pandit services, kalash preparation, basic पूजा सामग्री, invocation, and prayers. Additional items such as Durga Saptashati Path, Havan, daily Navratri worship, and कन्या पूजन may require separate arrangements. Before booking, confirm the puja date, auspicious timing, venue, samagri, Pandit dakshina, and the exact rituals included in the package.
