Tulsi Vivah Puja is a traditional Hindu ceremony celebrating the symbolic marriage of Goddess Tulsi to Lord Vishnu, often worshipped in the form of Shaligram Shila or Shri Krishna. Observed primarily on Devutthana Ekadashi or Dwadashi during the Hindu month of Kartik, this sacred occasion marks an auspicious time for devotional worship and the beginning of the traditional Hindu wedding season in many communities.
Tulsi Vivah is a revered Hindu religious ceremony that symbolically celebrates the marriage of Goddess Tulsi with Lord Vishnu. In many traditions, Lord Vishnu is represented by a Shaligram Shila or an image of Shri Krishna. Goddess Tulsi is worshipped as a sacred manifestation associated with devotion and purity, and the ceremony honours her special relationship with Lord Vishnu.
The festival is commonly observed on Devutthana Ekadashi or Dwadashi in the month of Kartik, although the exact observance varies by regional calendar and family tradition. Tulsi Vivah is celebrated in homes and temples with a decorated Tulsi plant, devotional songs, traditional wedding rituals, offerings, and prayers.
1. Puja Preparation and Sankalp: The worship area is cleaned and decorated. The Tulsi plant is placed in a suitable space, often decorated with rangoli, flowers, and traditional ornaments. The pandit begins with a sankalp according to the family's observance.
2. Ganesh Vandana: Prayers may be offered to Lord Ganesha for an auspicious beginning before the main ceremony.
3. Tulsi Mata Puja: Goddess Tulsi is worshipped with water, kumkum, akshat, flowers, incense, a diya, and other customary offerings. The plant should be handled respectfully and without causing damage.
4. Lord Vishnu or Shaligram Puja: Lord Vishnu, Shri Krishna, or Shaligram Shila is worshipped according to the family's tradition. Offerings may include flowers, tulsi leaves where appropriate, sandalwood paste, and bhog.
5. Symbolic Vivah Ceremony: The Tulsi plant and the representation of Lord Vishnu are brought together for the symbolic marriage. Depending on regional customs, the ceremony may include a ceremonial cloth, sacred thread, mangal geet, wedding offerings, and other traditional elements.
6. Mantra Jaap and Katha: The pandit may recite Vishnu mantras and narrate the traditional story associated with Tulsi Vivah. The specific katha and ritual sequence can differ across regions.
7. Bhog, Aarti, and Prasad: A suitable offering is presented to the deities, followed by aarti and prayers. Prasad may be distributed among family members and guests.
Lord Vishnu Mantra:
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय।
Tulsi Mata Mantra:
ॐ तुलस्यै नमः।
These mantras may be chanted during worship. The pandit can also guide the family in traditional prayers and recitations appropriate to their regional customs.
Families, couples, and individual devotees can arrange Tulsi Vivah Puja at home or in a temple to observe the Kartik tradition. The ceremony may be performed on a simple household scale or with a more elaborate symbolic wedding arrangement, depending on the family's customs and preferences.
The selected package may include a pandit's services, the main worship rituals, mantra chanting, and aarti. Tulsi plant, Shaligram Shila or Vishnu idol, flowers, wedding decorations, clothing, fruits, sweets, puja samagri, and other special arrangements should be confirmed before booking.
The date and ritual sequence may vary according to the regional Hindu calendar and family tradition. Please confirm the ceremony date, duration, language, location, samagri arrangements, and all package inclusions with the service provider.
